Artist residency

About the residency

Zona Planetaria’s residency programme is dedicated to sustainable ecology and alternative art production which aims to support the experience of living and creating in a rural context. Participating artists, with their capacity to imagine and transform, are invited to take a speculative, as well as an active approach to the residency towards embedding ecological and slow down principles into the everyday. Through practices of care, decompression and collaboration, residents are called to expand the understanding of nature and recreation.

Zona Planetaria aims to create an environment integrated with nature, a place to experience new perspectives and acquire new references, through conversation with curators and other practitioners. Zona Planetaria seeks to promote international collaboration and networking, bring together people from different fields and share ecological and cultural sustainability.

How the residency works

During the residency, participating artists will have a chance to incorporate new mediums and disciplines in their practice. This process will be supported by weekly feedback sessions, individual portfolio reviews, and brainstorming sessions with our curators.

At the end of the stay, we ask participants to present their work and practice through a public talk. In order to increase community engagement and gain experience, we also encourage artists to create and hold both public and private workshops linked to their practice and/or to join other events that are organized by Zona Planetaria. Other events can be organized by the residents, within the bounds of possibilities of the organisers.

Artists are also welcomed to participate in activities like fruit harvest, communal lunches, cooking experiments and place mapping activities.

Who can apply

The residency is open to people of all ages and backgrounds, and we welcome all those who are looking for space and time to explore new forms of interdisciplinary and collaboration.

Duration

The length of the residency goes from one week to two weeks, during which artists will have the opportunity to experiment new ways of working, focussing on their research and delivering workshops on-site or as outreach events.

Language

While we welcome residents from all over the globe, the languages of Zona Platenaria are Italian and English. However, the first language in the area is Italian, and English is spoken as a second language only in touristic contexts.

Accommodation and stay

Artists will have their own private room and there is plenty of space both indoor and outside to create and be inspired. All activities at the residency are arranged together with the host and other professionals who are using the property in the time being. This also applies to living arrangements such as cooking meals and keeping tidy. Sharing space means being able to have respectful and insightful discussions, having someone there to help you and be inspired to create something together.

Zona Planetaria is located in a rural area and it could happen to encounter harmless insects around. Running water is available but it is not drinkable. Although Zona Planetaria is located in South Italy and summers can be very hot, evenings can get chilly and warm clothing is recommended.

Materials and support

We cannot provide specific materials for artwork. The residency is in a rural area, so we recommend artists to travel with their own materials. Depending on your practice we might be able to provide some materials with a small fee. Feel free to get in touch to discuss your production needs.

Fees and payment

Participation fee for spontaneous applications is €200 per week.

This fee will go towards rent, utilities, upkeep of the facilities and administrative tasks. In return, the host offers bikes (limited), studio visits and curatorial support.

Please note: If you are selected as one of our participants, you will be required to deposit 40% of the fee within the first week of your acceptance to secure your place. Artists should cover their travel costs, daily expenses and cost of production of personal works. Artists should arrange their insurance before travelling. We do our best to ensure guests’ safety at all times, but we cannot take responsibility for personal illness, injuries or accidents. Nor can we take responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings. Please make sure you have adequate travel and health insurance.
